Our Trace of Time

What I Designed

A guided, repeatable experience format that uses structured prompts, pacing, and ritual to help participants move from surface-level conversation to meaningful connection.

Context

Many social gatherings—dates, reunions, anniversaries—are intended to create connection, but often remain at the level of small talk. Moments of reflection and gratitude are rarely facilitated.
I set out to design an experience that could consistently guide people into deeper, more meaningful interaction—without forcing or scripting the outcome.

Approach

Defining what “great” looks like

I identified key qualities of meaningful shared experiences:

  • Emotional progression over time

  • Psychological safety and openness

  • Balance between structure and spontaneity

  • A sense of shared authorship

Translating into an experience system

I designed a repeatable session format that includes:

  • Entry (Preparation):
A poem and menu set emotional context

  • Engagement (Progression):
Carefully sequenced questions guide conversation from light to deep

  • Deepening (Ritual):
Tea brewing and pacing create space for reflection

  • Closure (Reflection):
Participants revisit the journey and recognize what was shared

  • Artifact (Memory):
A co-created “Trace of Time” captures the experience

Facilitating and refining through practice

Across multiple sessions and partners, I refined:

  • Question phrasing

  • Emotional pacing

  • Group dynamics

This allowed the experience to remain structured yet responsive to different participants.

Designing for flexibility across contexts

The format was adapted across different themes and settings:

  • Nostalgia (shared history)

  • Un-Small Talk (new connections)

  • Shape (personal reflection)

Each variation maintained the same structural logic while adapting to different social dynamics.

Outcome

  • Sold-out sessions across multiple venues and partners

  • Repeat participation and strong word-of-mouth

  • Consistent emotional depth across different groups

  • Participants described the experience as:

    • “A session of gratitude.”

    • “A reminder to slow down and reflect.”

    • “A meaningful way to appreciate relationships.”

Experience Design Framework

  • Define purpose of gathering

  • Design emotional progression

  • Structure interaction through prompts and pacing

  • Embed ritual to guide behavior

  • Create a shared artifact
